The Woman in Black is a play written by Stephen Mallatratt in the late eighties. The play is based on a book with the same title penned by Susan Hill in 1983. The play is distinctively interesting as it only has two characters in it and they bring the invigorating and enthralling feel to the entire setting. It has been more than two decades but for this play the rave and ramble still follows. The play has been a crowd stealer for quite a while now. This play was originally directed by Robin Herford for London audience andIt is still a favorite in London. The play nowadays is not only performs in London but travels all across the UK. The current cast of London’s Woman in Black includes Michael Mears playing the role of Arthur Kipps and Orlando Wells as The Actor. The Understudies for these roles are Jeremy Whitton Spriggs and Charles Hoston. In the UK tour Arthur Kipss is being portrayed by Robert Demeger while Peter Bramhill plays the Actor.
The story of the play is very much like the book itself, It revolves around a junior solicitor named as Arthur Kipps. He goes to a small market town one day to attend a funeral and comes across a Woman in Black. She has a ghastly appearance, a wasted face and she is standing in the middle churchyard. He is quite surprised at her appearance but does not bother to mention it to the people in the town. He goes to the house of Eel Marsh which is also a former of Mrs Drablow’s. He comes across some of her old letters and discovers the real truth behind the Woman in Black, but everything comes with a price and he has to pay a price too!
The play opens in a Victorian setting where old Arthur is reading the manuscript of a story. He has hired an actor who is helping him in his work. The entire setting of the play has rusty spooky effect which intensifies the horrific part of the play. The entire treatment is eerie; the funeral, the local lawnmower and the inn all adds up to the entire effect. When Arthur spots the Woman in Black we are terrified already!
Has the curiosity of Arthur already got him into real trouble? What cost does he have to pay? Is there any way to get out of this trouble? Will he ever be able to escape from this place alive? The answer to all these questions can only be answered if you watch the play. Get your Woman in Black tickets now and find out what happens next!
