The original Broadway production was opened to the public on April 23rd, 2013 and it received a phenomenal reception and an overwhelming response from the audiences. The play is set in a two room Houston apartment in which resides a widow, her considerate son and his outspoken wife. The show deals with the stirring emotions and feelings of the elderly and how they can at times try to channelize those emotions by finding an escape. It also puts light on the power of nostalgia that can inflame different emotions in ageing parents as it does in the play. It makes Carrie yearn to visit her dearly hometown and when not allowed she finds her own means to handle the situation.
The widow, Carrie Watts, is played by the well-renowned and award-winning actress Cicely Tyson who successfully returns to the stage nearly after thirty years of her professional career. She is confederated by a remarkable big screen and stage actor, Cuba Gooding Jr., who plays the promising role of her son. To complete the interesting triangle, contributes the multiple award-winning actress and singer Vanessa Williams, who justly plays the role of Carrie Watts’ daughter-in-law.
This enormously talented trio gives birth to a magnum opus which is well received by the critics and the audiences alike. The show proceeds when Carrie runs from the Houston apartment in order to fulfill her desire to see her hometown and meets a young woman on her way. The chemistry that these two characters develop as the story continues confirms the artistic themes of compassion in Foote’s distinguished work. The director of the play, often named as the ultimate interpreter of Foote’s plays, Michael Wilson does justice to the original plot. He conveys the essence of the play simply, yet in an extremely compelling and beautiful way. The magnificence of the show is augmented with the lovely sets and backdrops by Jeff Cowie.
The beauty of the play lies in its thematic significance and the beautiful scripting. The combined skills of stage performers, play director and crew members turn this word-collection into a live theatrical experience. The show is charged with drama, light humor and altering emotions and has something for everyone. This noteworthy production is staging its shows at the magnificent Stephen Sondheim Theatre, New York.
