The musical was the brainchild of director Vincent J. Donehue, with the music and lyrics being done by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II respectively. Its book was written by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse and the original production made its Broadway debut in 1959. It would go on for almost fifteen hundred shows, while its West End counterpart would go on for almost a thousand shows more.
