The story of the play revolves around Frederic, a young pirate novice who is 21 years of age. As his apprenticeship draws towards an end, it turns out that he was indentured by mistake in the first place. His nurse who was half deaf had misheard the instructions and instead of indenturing him for a ‘pilot’, she had sent him to become a ‘pirate’.

However, after spending 21 years with his fellow pirates, Frederic decides to leave this profession forever. Although he loves his mates sincerely, he dedicates himself to the termination of such plundering pirates everywhere. Nevertheless, since he is a midnight away from becoming of age, he feels indebted to them and for their betterment, tells them their sole weakness; being a bit too softhearted. All it takes for any captive to get himself to be released is to exploit the pirate’s emotions by plead to being an orphan and their work is done.

The story then takes a turn when Frederic staggers upon a group of pretty damsels. Not having seen any woman in his entire life except for his half deaf nurse, Frederic finds himself falling for the prettiest of the lot; Mabel. The two mutually fall in love instantly but while Frederic is caught up in his love life, he forgets that the pirates around him are also attracted by the beautiful maidens.

The lonely pirates are enchanted by the attractiveness of their prisoners and see this as the perfect opportunity to get married in return for the captive’s freedom. The father of the maidens Major General Stanley however does not wish for this to happen. He arrives on the scene just in time and by claiming himself to be an orphan, he requests the pirates to let him and his daughters go. With the help of this lie, he gets his daughters a brief temporary pardon. On the inside however, the fear of his lie being uncovered still lurks and disturbs him.

Frederic then takes the major into his confidence and promises that he will stop the group of pirates from plundering. However, after an interesting turn of events, Frederic learns that his stay with the pirates is not going to be over so soon. It turns out that he was born on the 29th of February and so he grows older one year after every four years. According to that, at present his age is not more than five and to become of age, he must work with the pirates for 63 more years!

Caught in between his overcharged sense of duty and his love for Mabel, Frederic finds himself stuck in complications and confusions. With music by Arthur Sullivan and lyrics and book by William S. Gilbert, the play will leave you singing your heart out with happiness.
