The Nutcracker – Holiday Season Begins

The Nutcracker by the National Ballet of Toronto is choreographed by James Kudelka and the magnificent costumes and stage design is by Santo Loquasto. The story follows the same plot as that of all the other Nutcrackers – two siblings Marie and Misha wait for their favorite uncle on the Christmas party as he always comes bearing some exciting gifts. Marie receives a beautiful nutcracker doll from him and at midnight, the magic begins.

No matter how many alterations and productions are presented of The Nutcracker, the original score by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky remains the same. In fact, it’s always the highlight of the ballet. In James Kudelka’s adaptation, the focus is shifted to the siblings Marie and Misha as they embark on fun-filled adventures. The ballet also features 57 animals, including a life-size horse, sheep, rooster, unicorns and fox. There are two bears, and one of them makes its entry on rollerblades.
