This superb Katori Hall play, The Mountaintop, is an award winning play that has been met with much acclaim since its debut. The Mountaintop premiered back in 2009 with the first performance occurring in London’s West End in 2009 at the spectacular Trafalgar Studios, right after it had seen a superb sold out run at the Theatre503. This amazing play was the work of a highly talented team; headed by director James Dacre, The Mountaintop featured actress Lorraine Burroughs and actor David Harewood. In 2011, The Mountaintop premiered in the US on Broadway with the venue being the BenardB.JacobsTheatre. This superb American premiere received a lot of rave reviews and was widely hailed as one of the best premieres then. It features one of the best American actors today, Samuel L. Jackson, playing the role of Martin Luther King whereas yet another famous American actress, Angela Basett, played the other main role.

The Broadway production of The Mountaintop was directed by Kenny Leon, a Tony Award nominated director. It starred Samuel L. Jackson as Martin Luther King and kicked off in late 2011. Initially, the famous HalleBerry was to play the other main role as Camae but was unable to, leading to Angela Basett starring as the mysterious maid working at the Lorraine Hotel during the last night in the life of the respected Revered Martin Luther King. This Broadway production of the The Mountaintop featured a number of producers that included Jean Doumanian Productions, Ambassador Theatre Group, Sonia Friedman Productions, Jerry Frankel, Bob Bartner, Ted Snowdon and Tom Wirtshafter.

The Broadway run of The Mountaintop was praised as being ‘brilliant, powerful, heartbreaking, humorous and exhilarating’. It was also the play that featured the very first Broadway performance of famous actor Samuel L. Jackson. The media went on to give the production rave reviews. The Mountaintop also received several awards and led to Katori Hall receiving the coveted Susan Smith Blackburn Prize.
