One of the most talked about musicals premiering on Broadway this season, The Last Ship is based upon an album of the same name by none other than Sting. This musical follows the story of several shipyard workers who are inspired to build a ship and sail the world. Inspired by a priest, these shipyard workers then go on a truly marvelous journey.
The musical draws heavily upon his memories growing up Newscastle, before his days as The Police's front man. Other than the album of the same name, the musical also draws heavily on his 1990 album, The Soul Cages, a solo release following the tragic and untimely passing of his father. This production's creative team features John Logan and Brian Yorkey writing the book with Sting as its composer. It is all set for a fantastic opening and premiere on Broadway, which is bound to be a truly phenomenal experience for theatergoers.
His album is also set in the shipyards of Tyneside and serves as the basis of the musical. The story is influenced from his childhood. From the son of an engineer fitter's mate and a hairdresser, he receives a scholarship to study at British grammar school and was separated from everyone he grew up with. Suddenly, he saw himself transported from Wallsend on Tyneside's streets to Newcastle. This and many other childhood experiences have been drawn upon to build on this inspiring and moving musical.
The characters in The Last Ship include the singing welder, Jock; Jackie, the foreman; Gideon; Adrian, the intellectual riveter; Davey, the drunk and Peggy, the barmaid. All these characters are inspired by the shipyard in Sting's hometown. The story portrays the shipyard workers as having immense pride in what they build, gigantic ships, despite hating the place. The album of the same name also sees contributions from Brian Johnson of AC/DC, Jimmy Nail and fiddler and Uilleann piper, Kathryn Tickell.
Sting, creator and composer of this musical, was born in Wallsend, in England's Northumberland region. He rose to fame in 1971 as a member of The Police. Soon after, he kicked off a very successful solo career. Today, he is often seen on stage playing the guitar, one the many instruments he plays aside from bass, mandolin, harmonic, hurdy gurdy, oboe and lute. His music has been released by A&M Records, Interscope Records, Universal Music Group and Deutsche Grammophon.
Sting is also an actor, activist and prominent philanthropist. His style of music still stands out today, which is four good decades after he began playing music. Incorporating rock, new age, jazz, classical and reggae, his music has comfortably stood the test of time and led to sixteen Grammy Awards, an Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award. He has also received several Academy Awards for Best Original Song nominations. He also has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Sting has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as well as the Songwriters Hall of Fame. More than one hundred million of his albums have been sold worldwide, with nine platinum certifications in the US and seven in the UK. He is one of the 100 Greatest Artists of Rock ranked by VH1. This musical will give the audience an insight into the artist’s life and career, so get your The Last Ship tickets as soon as possible.
