Broadway has provided us with a wide array of stories over the years. Some of those have managed to move people to tears while others have made them laugh. The productions have evoked emotions of pain and happiness to live in the memories of the fans for the rest of their lives. This fall, another such story is coming to the big stage. It is none other than the Gin Game.
A Tale to Remember
The Gin Game was first written by D.L.Coburn in 1976 and follows the story of Weller Martin and Fonsia Dorsey, residents of a retirement home for the elderly. Both are extremely intelligent with quick wits and feel that none of the other residents meet their lofty standards. So naturally they become acquaintances and start spending time with each other.
To while away the time, Martin offers to teach Dorsey how to play gin rummy, while they talk and contemplate about the lives they have lived. Soon Fonsia starts to beat him at his own game, frustrating him and causing him to become more and more competitive.
Spread over three Sundays, the play follows their conversations on several different topics, which slowly causes both of them to become increasingly vindictive towards each other's stories. Their sharp wit and entertaining tete-a-tete eventually reveals the deepest fears and weaknesses in both characters. Soon their conversations become as hard fought as their game of gin rummy.
Back to the Roots
D.L.Coburn was working as a marketing consultant the year his play was first produced. It made its debut in a small theater in Los Angeles which could seat barely more than fifty people at a time. However, when the reviews came back positive, people in the theater industry jumped at the chance to take the production all the way to Broadway.
The play was presented in several prominent venues over the next year and after barely thirteen months made its long awaited debut on Broadway in 1977. The play became the darling of both the critics and the public and it stayed in production for over five hundred shows. The production then headed out on tour, traveling to major cities in the US, Russia and England, where it was lauded for its originality and thought provoking dialogues.
The Gin Game's Leading Stars
Now that the play is making a return to Broadway, the new production will feature a cast that will capture the very essence of this wonderful play and put it on the stage for the world to see. The main characters will be played by the legendary James Earl Jones and Cicely Tyson and that says it all.
Jones is among the most recognizable names in the entertainment industry and one the best actors of his generation. He has also become a famous voice actor, lending his voice to some of the most iconic characters in pop culture, including Darth Vader in Star Wars and Mufasa in Lion King. For his incomparable contributions to the industry, he has been presented with three Emmy Awards, one Golden Globe Award, an honorary Academy Award and a Tony Award for the “Best Actor.”
Tyson also has a distinguished background in acting and is considered among the most accomplished actresses on stage, television and film. She has been nominated for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award. She has won three Emmy Awards and has in total earned eleven Emmy nominations. She has additionally won a Tony Award, an Outer Critics Award, and two Drama Desk Awards to date.
