Newly founded opera company, NI Opera based in Northern Ireland is now bringing you an all new production of Wagner’s most popular classic, The Flying Dutchman . The company has been producing some of the most critically acclaimed works such as Turn of the Screw, Hansel and Gretel and Tosca and it was only a matter of time till it decided to bring its attention to the Flying Dutchman, which it has described as its most challenging undertaking so far that also happens to be its first ever home-grown Wagner performance from Northern Ireland. The opera features an incredible international cast that included the likes of Belfast-born singer Bruno Caproni and Giselle Allen, as well as a chorus brought together from abroad. It also promises the Ulster Orchestra right in the pit, where the production is conducted by the renowned Nicholas Chalmers, designed by Simon Holdsworth and directed by the legendary Oliver Mears who is also the company’s current artistic director. Together, the artists have woven the most magical of operas that is not only fascinating in its plot, it also provides audience with an extraordinarily imaginative and stimulating spectacle by combining the most beautiful romantic music with thrilling drama. The plot kicks off when a Norwegian sea captain encounters the ghostly captain who has been destined to sail the seas for an eternity—The Flying Dutchman. The two captains make a deal that is supposed to e mutually beneficial to them, but when things are not going according to their wishes, many other lives are hurled into the ensuing maelstrom.  Given the many thrills locked into this spectacular opera, it is no surprise to see The Flying Dutchman tickets become such a raging favorite among theatre-goers.

The NI Opera, which is producing The Flying Dutchman, was founded in 2010 after being funded by Arts Council of Northern Ireland as an Ireland-based opera company on a remit to perform high-quality operas all over Northern Ireland. Alongside, the company has been trusted with the task of promoting young talent of the region as well as forming partnerships with internationally, with art organizations. Based in Belfast’s Grand Opera House, the company took on Oliver Mears as its first artistic director who has already completed productions like Tosca, The Medium and Turn of the Screw, where the former most won an Irish Times Theatre Award in 2011, in the category of Best Opera. In addition his production of Noye’s Fludde by Benjamin Britten was staged at Beijing Music Festival in 2012, which marked its Chinese premiere.

 The basic story and theme of The Flying Dutchman originates from the nautical folklore of the seventeenth century that Wagner based his operatic piece on.  In this production, the Ulster Orchestra is placed in the pit, which means that five from the six leading roles have been performed by Irish-born artists, while the chorus comprises of amateurs. This production has been created with much enthusiasm bring the company’s locally sourced accomplishment. Though Nicholas Chalmers, the conductor, launches the opera’s overture with great purpose and momentum, it takes a while for the plot to develop on and catch fire. Being Wagner’s finest work, this opera certainly contains his most sought-after qualities as a composer, which is to say that its music and libretto were both his creations.


Wagner’s genius is truly reflected in The Flying Dutchman, with particular reference to his technique in musical language, which at the time of the opera’s creation, influenced the direction in which classical music was heading. In fact, his piece on Tristan and Isolde has sometimes been described to mark the beginning of modern music. Wagner’s Flying Dutchman is actually inspired by his own stormy voyage to London, which he combines with Heinrich Heine’s plot.
