The Fire of Anatolia was inaugurated by Mustafa Erdogan back in 1999, following his passion for dance of all cultures. His dance troupe consists of one hundred and twenty professional dancers who are known to display a large variety of folk dances, apart from presenting musical performances as well. Ever since the dance group’s formation, it has performed in over eight five countries, including China, USA and Japan. They have performed in front of over twenty million people till now. The concept of establishing a dance group that would focus on fusing Anatolian dances with ballet and modern dance styles was Mustafa Erdogan’s lifelong dream. After conducting dance classes at Bilkent University, Erdogan finally decided to leave teaching and moved onto forming his own dance troupe.
The foundations for the troupe were based when he gathered a small group of dancers. These dancers were attracted via newspaper advertisements and television commercials. Erdogan was able to gather ninety of the most talented dancers from a pool of over seven hundred and fifty applicants. He named this group the Sultans of Dance. To create the team of best dancers, Erdogan chose contestants strictly on the basis of dancing and physical abilities. He started teaching the talented lot several dancing techniques from ballet to folk and modern dance. One of the first few performances that were held took place in 2001. A year later the name of the troupe was changed to the Fire of Anatolia and with this their debut world tour initiated. With over one hundred and twenty dancers now, the troupe divides themselves into groups, performing at numerous venues simultaneously.
Over the years with expansions and larger than life shows, the Fire of Anatolia has become one of the three largest dance troupes in the world. A few places where the dance group has set the live stage on fire include Germany, Romania, Hungary, Poland, Switzerland, Bulgaria, Bosnia, France, Kazakhstan, The Netherlands, Mexico, Russia and Egypt. Their programs currently are titled "Dawool" and "Fire of Anatolia". In Dawool, the dancers start off performing a religious scene which then turns into a romantic duet followed by drum sessions. This showcase is focused on reflecting the multifarious culture of Istanbul in a unique manner. A majority of the choreography is done by Mustafa Erdogan himself. He is also joined by Alper Aksoy who incorporates influences of dancers such as Aegean Region. One of Turkey’s most prominent ballet dancers and choreographers, Oktay Keresteci, handles ballet and modern dance routines.
Over the years, the Fire of Anatolia has established several Guinness Records. This includes the record for "the fastest dance performance" in which the dancers performed two hundred and forty one steps per minute. It also include establishing the record for "the largest audience" when the group presented a show in front of four thousand people in Eregli. If this wasn’t enough the Fire of Anatolia was the very first group to take on the stage at the Bodrum Antique Theater after over two thousand years. In 2013 the troupe received an invitation to perform at the CCTV New Year’s Gala.
