The Crucible was a play written by Arthur Miller in 1953 based on the famous Witch Trials of Salem back in 1692 and 1693. The play follows the story of a group of girls who are caught using ‘magic’ and branded as witches. They however convince everybody that they were enchanted by other witches living in the town, after which they start accusing completely innocent people in order to get free and fulfill certain personal desires. Today this play is considered among the greatest works in the history of American Literature and even managed to win a Tony Award. If you want to watch it for yourself, then get The Crucible tickets and enjoy the show, live at the Walter Kerr Theatre.
The Crucible Cities
American literature is chalk full of literary classics that have lived on through the ages and have managed to keep audiences entranced, even to this day. Their timeless appeal, along with the great affect on society as a whole, is just another example of the power the written words hold and the feats they can accomplish. From freedom of speech, to the basic rights of everyday citizens-literature has played its part in the fight for liberty. The 1953 play titled ‘The Crucible,’ which highlighted the threat of McCarthyism during the Cold War era, is a great example of that.
The Plot
Written by the famous playwright Arthur Miller, The Crucible takes an old story and manages to relate it to the wave of uncertainty and fear caused by the anticommunist sentiment during the Cold War. As much as it was relatable back then, it is one of the very few stories that people can associate with even today. This epic play is now back and if you want to see it for yourself, then book The Crucible tickets to truly comprehend the intricacies of the storyline live at the Walter Kerr Theatre.
A Story for the Ages
The Crucible is based on the Salem Witch Trials that took place hundreds of years ago, during 1692 and 1693. A group of girls are found in the woods uttering incantations and casting spells, under the guidance of a servant named Tituba. Once found the girls are accused of witchcraft but they all deny the accusations and instead insist they were bewitched by other witches in town. They start accusing innocent people of the crime, all for various despicable reasons and under the influence of several people in power. That leads to witch trials where many people are hanged without any proof based solely on the word of mouth.
The Man Pulling the Strings
Arthur Miller was born in 1915 and it wasn’t till he was in college that he realized his talent for writing. The first play he ever wrote was titled “No Villain” and it helped him win the Avery Hopwood Award. After graduation he turned down a profitable job at Twentieth Century Fox for a job as a playwright and went on to write his first real popular play, ‘All My Sons” in 1947.
All in all, Miller was associated with theater for over seventy years. In all this time he worked on more than thirty five stage plays, over ten radio plays, eight screenplays as well as wrote several other novels, books and short stories. He won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing and two Tony Awards for Best Author. He was also awarded the Kennedy Center Honors in 1984 and was inducted in to the American Theater Hall of Fame in 1979.
The Revival of a Classic
The Crucible has been revived several times on stage ever since it’s debut over sixty years ago and has also been adapted for Opera, television and film as well. The opera made its debut in 1961 and was very well received, managing to win a Pulitzer Prize for Music, along with the New York Music Critics Circle Citation. Its first film adaptation came out four years after the play had been awarded the Tony Award, and it went on to win a BAFTA Award. An Academy Award nominated film adaptation was made in 1996, while it has also been adapted on television quite a few times to date.
Now that this incredible story is making a return to the Broadway stage, here is the chance that all fans have been waiting for. If you want to watch this play yourself, then book The Crucible tickets and enjoy this incredible experience, live at the Walter Kerr Theatre.
