The musical shows the creators’ lifetime fascination with Mormonism and musicals. The musical narrates the story of two young men, who are Mormon missionaries that have been sent to a remote settlement in a rural area located in northern Uganda. Upon arrival, the two Mormon missionaries see that the local population is under threat from a brutal warlord. The locals there are more worried about the war, poverty, famine and AIDS, than about religion. Despite the troubling situation around them, the two missionaries remain naive and positive as they try to share their knowledge of the Book of Mormon. It took nearly seven years to develop the musical, and when it opened on Broadway in March, 2011, it received an overwhelming response with a number of theatre awards that include a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album and a staggering nine Tony Awards. Since its premiere on Broadway, it has released an original Broadway cast recording that became the highest-charting Broadway cast album in more than four decade, climbing to the third spot on the Billboard charts
Following the success of the original Broadway production, the first National US tour of the musical kicked off in 2012 and also in the same year, a Chicago production of the musical started off on December 19, 2012.
