Helen Mirren had already performed the role of The Queen in Stephen Frears’ 2007 film. Her portrayal of the British monarch in the movie had earned her a prestigious Academy Award. She revisits her iconic queen role, this time in Peter Morgan’s play, The Audience, and has performed on stage, as impeccably as she had done on screen. Her incisive performance brings together profound sensitivity, acerbic wit and intelligence that promises to sweep the audiences off their feet. In the production, Mirren plays the Queen at various points in her lifetime, through her late twenties to the age of eighty.
The plot by Stephen Morgan tackles the Queen’s story in an episodic manner. It is a series of vignettes drawn out of the British sovereign’s weekly interactions with her Prime Ministers. The plot of the story covers six decades, from Winston Churchill to David Cameron. It is not seamless in its blend of intimate character study and political chronicles, but despite that, you can expect the play to be briskly entertaining.
The play is directed by Stephen Daldry. The insight on the historical content and its political significance was provided by the Emeritus Professor of Government at Oxford University and former tutor of Prime Minister David Cameron, Vernon Bogdanor. The play reconstructs the fictionalized versions of the undocumented encounters that took place between the Crown and the Government. It shows the ways, direct and indirect, of how the UK’s symbolic leader has influenced the country’s politics and in turn, how she has been influenced by leading politicians.
Through his production, Peter Morgan amusingly hints at Britain’s Prime Ministers being, mildly dysfunctional, needing medication for taming their disorders and sleep-deprived for most of their time in office. The notable cases with the Labor PM Wilson and McCabe’s droll performance are some on the many interesting instances that have been highlighted in this production.
Even regular theater goers are excited for this upcoming play as the show has received rave reviews from critics. Get your The Audience tickets at the earliest and watch the upcoming performance of the play, live.
