Within a matter of few weeks, he had learned much about ventriloquism and bought his first companion, a Willie Talk from Sears. The first ever performance which he gave during a church picnic won him $25 prize and he got his first puppet at the age of eighteen.

Fator’s career started in 1987 when he toured with Freedom Jam as their lead singer. The band performed in more than 200 middle and high schools in the US and Canada. By the mid of 1988, he became the lead singer of Texas the Band. He was twenty three then. This time around Fator used Walter T. Airedale, his puppet in his shows and got considerable public attention. 

Before he had his first breakthrough as a ventriloquist during the second season of America’s Got Talent, Fator did solo acts for many years without much success. He appeared in America’s Got Talent in 2007 with hopes that making it to the Top 20 would help him immensely in his career but to his utter surprise he ended up winning the prize. In 2008, he appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show along with Simon Cowell who referred to him as one of the two most talented people on the earth.
