Brainchild of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine
Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine are the creative geniuses behind, Sunday in the Park with George. Sondheim’s beautiful music is the soul of the show whereas Lapine is the author of the musical’s book. Over the years, Sunday in the Park with George has been enjoyed by millions around the globe.
The musical is based on the painting of the famous French post-impressionist painter, Georges Seurat titled, ‘A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte.’ It saw the light of day when James Lapine persuaded Sondheim to make his return to theater after he decided to write mystery novels. Both got inspired by the work of Seurat and they spent quite a while at the prestigious Art institute of Chicago in order to study the painting. It was not long before Lapine observed that there is one important figure not in canvas, which was the artist himself. This led them to create Sunday in the Park with George.
