South Pacific Cities
The story of South Pacific is as moving and relevant today as it was when it was first written for the post world war audience - an audience that, not unlike us, was all too familiar with the way war pushes us into the blind well of prejudice, eventually coaxing our humanity and redefining our identity as individuals. When South Pacific was written and created for stage by Oscar Hammerstein and Joshua Logan, with music by Richard Rodgers, the 1949 production attracted thousands of theater-goers. The musical was showered with all manner of accolades. It was made into a film in 1958 and the songs were sung by many a popular artist. The musical won over fans at home and abroad with songs like "Bali Hai," "Some Enchanted Evening," and "Younger than Springtime."
Winner of Tony Awards (including Best Musical), Lawrence Olivier Award, Drama Desk Awards, Outer Critics Circle Awards and others, South Pacific's brilliant history continues with its recent revival. The musical won the Tony for Best Revival Musical on Broadway. Not only did Michener (author of the original text) earn the Pulitzer for Literature, but Rodgers and Hammerstein also won the Pulitzer - for Drama - in1950. Rodgers became the first to be given a Pulitzer for Original Musical Score. Hammerstein's lyrics became wildly popular the world over. The musical won ten Tony awards and has the distinction of winning all four Tony awards in acting.
Watch this spectacular play, a play that has made its mark for visual effects as much as for the lyrics and music, having won distinctions in scenic design and lighting design. You'll be transported back in time with the translucent, dream-like visual effects; you'll feel the past throb in the vivacious tunes of South Pacific. Make the memory of a life-time! Infectious tunes like "A Wonderful Guy," "I'm Gonna Wash that Man Right Outa My hair" and "Honey Bun" will ignite your spirit!
South Pacific is a World War period-piece, having been created more than half a century ago, but it transcends time and place. This candid story of two couples whose happiness is threatened by racial prejudice at a time when the world has yet to be healed from the disasters of modern warfare, is a story of love having the ultimate upper hand over hate. While the ocean roars, our brave heroine stands on her "little flat feet" in the sand, and sings: "Fearlessly I'll face them and argue their doubts away/ Loudly I'll sing about flowers and spring/Flatly I'll stand on my little flat feet/….. Love is a grand and a beautiful thing!"
