Synopsis of Sleeping Beauty
Sleeping Beauty is truly a tale as old as time. On the day of the grand christening of Princess Aurora, the grand palace was abuzz with preparations as the King and Queen welcomed their long-awaited only child. The princess, named Aurora, was admired by all in the kingdom, including a cast of beautiful fairies and members of the royal household, who all had the utmost love and compassion for the newborn princess. All the fairies bestowed upon the princess gifts of various qualities such as grace, generosity, a musical voice, joy, and beauty. However, one fairy, the evil fairy Carabosse, did not receive an invitation to this event. Furious at this, she stormed into the hall and cursed the baby Princess Aurora, placing a spell on her that would see her die on her 16th birthday by pricking her finger on a spinning wheel. Everyone in the hall and the kingdom beyond was saddened by this matter. But all was not lost. The strongest fairy in the region, the Lilac Fairy, converted the death spell to 100 years of sleep. She could not undo the spell altogether, but this was the best she could manage to save the princess from her ill fate. Find out how it is the true love's kiss that would break the spell on Princess Aurora and bring back happiness to the doomed kingdom.
Reviews for the Sleeping Beauty
Recent productions of this legendary tale have been praised by fans and critics alike. The reviews for all of these performances have been far beyond positive. The Boston Globe talks about "David Walker's French Baroque set and costumes that look as sumptuous as ever; Marius Petipa's choreography, with some additions by Frederick Ashton, needs no updating. Neither does the story." Simon Parris talks about the recent Melbourne production of the Sleeping Beauty in the following praising words: "Gabriela Tylesova's dazzling designs are as impactful and impressive as ever. Tylesova's first ever tutus are not just coloured exquisitely but are cleverly created to sit softly at the waist and then fluffily expand as they fill with air during movement. The generous budget for the production, the bulk of which was raised through philanthropy, allows Tylesova to reach a quality of staging that far exceeds the crinkled painted backdrops of old. The carefully considered combination of costumes and scenery creates a delectable blend of colour in each scene. Tylesova highlights the 100-year sleep of Aurora with a striking jump from the grand Baroque of court to the smart Edwardian wear of the Prince's hunting party."
With such a talented cast, and an even more talented set of dancers, this production of Sleeping Beauty promises to be grander and more magnificent than ever.
