Just like the parent movie, which is ranked amongst Bravo's list of The 100 Funniest Movies, the musical itself is no less funny. It leaves the audience with side stitches from its hilarious situation comedy and witty dialogues. The main cast has been just as talented as that of the movie, with Dawnn Lewis in the lead role of Deloris and Elizabeth Ward Land. The show premiered in Pasadena in 2006, directed by Peter Schneider, and was an instant hit. Even though it ran at the Pasadena Playhouse for a period of only three months, it still managed to break records during this short time. The outstanding choreography of Marguerite Derricks for the show won her much appreciation. The show was such a success that the Los Angeles Times eulogized it in the following words: "Broadway blockbuster written all over".
The musical, with a book by Bill Steinkellner and Cheri, also made quite an impression in Atlanta, where it premiered in 2007. It was just as much appreciated for its original lyrics by Glenn Slater as it was in Pasadena. The show opened in Alliance Theatre in the City of Atlanta in 2007, where it ran for a full month. Curt Holman, an Atlanta-based critic, was impressed with the gutsy attempt to stay true to the movie and turn its weakest moments into real gems.
After the 2007 production, Sister Act finally reached the West End. The West End production was peculiar in that it was produced by Whoopi Goldberg herself in collaboration with Stage Entertainment, and also because Peter Schnieder, the original director of the production, directed the West End production as well. The show was expected to run for two years and then close down in 2010. The West End cast included the stunning 24-year-old actor Patina Miller in the role of Deloris, after a series of long and tiring auditions. Whoopi Goldberg herself is expected to join the cast soon enough in the role of Mother Superior, not Deloris. The production is expected to hit Broadway soon enough.
The production has received several awards and nominations for its outstanding productions. Patina Miller won the 2010 Whatsonstage.com Theatre Goers Choice Award in the category of Best Actress in a Musical. Natasha Katz won the Award for Best Lighting Designer for her stellar work in the London Production. These small but amazing contributions make the show a remarkable success. If you want to see just how truly fantastic it is, grab your Sister Act tickets now and enjoy.
