Being an adaptation, the story of the stage version of Singin’ in the Rain follows the film very closely. It takes place during the 1920s, a period endearingly remembered as the Roaring ‘20s. At the time, silent films and their stars reigned supreme in Hollywood. One of these celebrities is Don Lockwood, who - with his many hit movies and an on-screen relationship with one of tinsel’s town finest looking leading ladies - is the epitome of super-stardom. The plot starts to unfold when talking movies, or "talkies", begin to emerge as the new form of entertainment and when Don meets an unknown chorus girl. Thereon, Don and his contemporaries must struggle to keep their footing in a changing world, as their lives change forever, along with Hollywood itself.
At the time of the original film, Singin’ in the Rain was not a major success. This was despite its illustrious cast, which featured the likes of Gene Kelly – who also directed the film – Debbie Reynolds, Jean Hagen and Donald O’Connor. However, the film would go on to win a Golden Globe for Best Actor as well as a Writers Guild of America Award. It is also now regarded as one of the greatest American films of all time.
Following something so iconic and historically significant is no easy feat, and would be considered daunting by anyone’s reckoning. However, someone forgot to tell renowned theatrical guru Jonathan Church about this and he is now directing the stage version of Singin’ in the Rain . Church’s previous credits include West End productions like The Witches, Of Mice and Men, A Busy Day and The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby. And that’s not all, throughout his long and accomplished career, Church has helmed a dynamic range of show, like Romeo and Juliet, The Merchant of Venice, Top Girls, Elizabeth Rex, Closer, Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune, The Crucible and Colombe, to name just a few.
Church’s production of Singin’ in the Rain retains is original plot as well as the songs, their composition and, of course, their lyrics. Where it differs, naturally, is its cast of fresh-faced performers, which feature the likes of Adam Cooper, Daniel Crossley, Scarlett Strallen and Katherine Kingsley. These actors play Don Lockwood, Cosmo Brown, Kathy Selden and Lina Lamont, respectively.
In addition to the principal cast, the creative team behind theatrical reincarnation of Singin’ in the Rain includes award-winning choreographer Andrew Wright, who accomplishments include nominations for Best Theatre Choreographer at the 2012 Olivier Awards and the 2011 Broadway World Awards. He was also nominated in the category of Best Musical Production at the 2011 UK Theatre Awards after having already won that very honor at the 2008 ceremony.
Another major attraction of the stage musical is its design, which features "rain makers." These are state-of-the-art mechanisms that pump as much as fourteen thousand liters of water on the stage throughout the duration of the show. All the water is recycles with the help of intuitively designed water drains, a purpose-built reservoir and even a treatment plant in the pit to help clean the water.
Throughout its run in the U.K., Singin’ in the Rain has been overwhelmingly successful. Reviews for the show have been very positive, with publications like The Daily Mail, Sunday Express and The Daily Telegraph awarding the musical five stars. Comments on the show include "Singin’ in the Rain makes a splash in every sense" and "Five stars all around. A great night out." The show has also been nominated for a 2012 Evening Standard Theatre Award in the category of Best Musical.
The American tour of Singin’ in the Rain is sure to be no less a magnificent sight than its English counterpart. Eager fans can now get their Singin’ in the Rain tickets , which are widely available.
