History

The dance company was founded in 2006 in the New York City by a group of Chinese dissidents, members of the Chinese Falun Gong order. Their aim was to revive the “real” Chinese culture and history, the culture before the Communist Revolution, before it was wiped out and re-written by the Communist Party. They not only wanted to revive the original Chinese culture, but also introduce it to the world.

Productions, Dances & Music

Each Shen Yun dance performance typically lasts for 2 ½ hours. Each production has about 20 vignettes featuring operatic and solo singing, and ethnic and Chinese dances. The show has bilingual MCs, so you won’t feel out of place if you don’t understand Mandarin.

Shun Yen is known for producing large-scale group dances. Each act has around 40 male and female dancers, who perform classical Chinese dances, making use of forms and postures, tumbling techniques and acrobatics.

Shen Yun’s music is unique. It makes use of Western philharmonic orchestra, which uses several Chinese instruments such as guzheng, dizi, suona, pipa and other Chinese percussion instruments.
