Synopsis

The plot of the musical revolves around two employees of a shop in Budapest, who are not quite fond of each other at work, but have no idea that each is the other’s secret pen pal met through lonely-hearts ads.

She Loves Me is a cheerful romantic comedy that follows the daily lives of Amalia and Georg who work together at a small Hungarian Parfumerie. They feel a strong sense of dislike towards each other from the very beginning. He thinks that she is stuck up and she thinks that he is stubborn and arrogant. But what neither of them realizes is that they are secretly falling in love with each other, through letters written to an anonymous lonely hearts pen pal after the work day is over.

The first Act opens up with a scene of the exterior of the Parfumerie, on a pleasant summer morning in the 1930s, where all the employees are gathering. Georg here is seen referring to exchanging letters with an anonymous woman. Soon after, a nervous young woman enters the shop, in hopes of getting a job at the Parfumerie. Georg tells her that they are not hiring, but she demands to speak to the owner, Maraczek, who eventually ends up hiring her.

As the story progresses, Amalia gets stood up on her blind date with the ‘Dear Friend’ she keeps writing to, while Georg on the other hand, is shocked to find out that she is the girl he has been writing to all this while. The story goes on to become even more interesting as the supporting actors begin to develop a presence of their own. Several interesting twists and numerous grand musical numbers later, the play reaches its conclusion. And it is a conclusion you would not want to miss.
