Secondhand Lions was originally a comedy-drama feature film released by New Line Cinema in 2003. It was written and directed by Tim McCaniles and starred Robert Duvall and Michael Caine in lead roles as the eccentric uncles of an introvert young boy who is sent to live with them. After the success of the film it has now been adapted into a musical which will be staged at the famous 5th Avenue Theater in Seattle. For all the theater and music fans out there, this is one musical you should not miss so hurry up and buy your Secondhand Lions tickets as soon as possible.
The adaptation of famous films into theater productions seems to be a common trend on Broadway nowadays. Films are constantly being adapted for live stage musicals. The success of some of these adaptations like "The Wizard of Oz", "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" and "Hairspray" has been astounding. One of the reasons is that live quality theater is always a more immersive experience for the audience as compared to a television screen. So it is in the same flow that the beautiful and heartwarming tale of "Secondhand Lions" is being produced for the stage.
The musical is directed by Scott Schwartz while the choreography is handled by the Emmy award-winning Smash choreographer Joshua Bergasse. The book for the musical has been written by the Tony Award and Drama Desk winning writer, Rupert Holmes. Holmes won the Tony Award in 1985 for his work on the Tony Award winning hit musical "The Mystery of Edwin Drood". He won the Drama Desk Award for Best Book in 2007 for his work on the hit Broadway musical "Curtains".
The music and lyrics are the brain child of Michael Weiner and Alan Zachary, who also teamed together to work on the hit Broadway musical "First Date". Their credits also include the family musical "Mystery of the Dancing Princesses" which was performed at the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera and later at the National Alliance for Musical Theater Festival in New York to great critical acclaim. The two have also collaborated on Disney projects like the musical "Twice Charmed: An Original Twist on the Cinderella Story" and the hit Disney movie, "Cinderella II".
The musical will be brought to life on stage at the famous "5th Avenue Theater" in Seattle with the acting talents of a superb cast, most of whom are established actors on Broadway. The lead role of Walter is taken by young Johnny Rabe, who starred in Broadway’s "A Christmas Story". Taking their place beside him on stage are the Tony Award Nominees Gregg Edelman and Mark Jacoby who play the boy’s eccentric uncles.
The musical takes the audience back to the 1950’s, when in those simpler times, a young boy’s imagination would suffice to turn a boring summer on a Texas farm into a magical adventure of a lifetime. Eleven year old Walter’s imagination is stirred by the magical tales of hidden treasure and captivating princesses that his great uncles recount to him as his regular summer turns into an extraordinary experience and he learns the value of love and family.
The composers have said that the musical score for the show is a broad country palette ranging from "classic Western film score music to Patsy Cline ballads to bluegrass and rhythm and blues." So the audience is in for a wonderful musical experience as the show takes them on a train down to the western countryside. Along with the fresh and inventive music, the audience will be captivated by gorgeous costumes, elaborate sets, swashbuckling swordplay and swirling dance numbers, making this a wonderfully entertaining experience.
So for all the music and theater lovers out there, this is one show that you cannot miss out on. A show for the whole family, it offers something for all age groups. To catch this musical live, book your Secondhand Lions tickets as soon as possible and come watch a wonderfully entertaining show.
