The Royal Hanneford Circus is one of the world’s finest circuses, founded way back in 1690. Labeled the Oldest Circus in the World, it is a touring family circus whose first performance as a traveling troupe dates back to 1807. In 1903, the family took on the name of the Hanneford Royal Canadian Circus, and began international tours. During the early tens and twenties, the Royal Hanneford Circus toured Europe and the UK, performing in the US as well. The circus as it is today was re-imagined in 1965, after Tommy Hanneford started producing shows that featured the entire family. They trace their routes back to Michael Hanneford who, during the seventeenth century, entertained British royalty with juggling, acrobatics and bareback riding. In 1778, one of their members was called by King George III to compete against another juggler, to determine the best juggler.
Founded in the UK, the Royal Hanneford Circus attracted the attention of John Ringling of the famous Ringling Brothers Circus who bought the circus so that they could perform in the US. they began performing their acts featuring some of the most famous acrobats and performers of their times. Some of these performers were even inducted into the Circus Hall of Fame.
