The Ringling Circus was founded in 1884, at a time when the Barnum & Bailey Circus was establishing itself as one of the biggest shows around. After the death of owner P.T. Barnum in 1891, his partner James A. Bailey took the circus to even greater heights, making it the biggest circus show in the country. During its heyday the Barnum & Bailey Circus owned five rings, travelled on eighty five railroad carts and employed more than a thousand people.
During this time the Ringling Bros. Circus was establishing itself as a force in itself. The five Ringling brothers had already started buying smaller circuses and would incorporate them in their own circus. They bought the Barnum & Bailey Circus in 1907, but merged it with the Ringling Bros Circus in 1919.
Despite being a huge success during the earlier part of the twentieth century, the world was changing, and amidst other forms of entertainment, the circus slowly faded out. Only July 1956, the financially troubled show gave its last performance in the big tent. LIFE magazine wrote that “a magical era had passed forever."
However, Irvin Feld purchased the circus and brought back the magic once again. Under his ownership the circus moved out of tents and into arenas. The show started incorporating new technology and modern techniques into the age old art and the Feld Entertainment Company has ensured that the circus achieves heights of excellence never before reached by a travelling circus.
