Initially named La Maledizione, Rigoletto is the name of Giuseppe Verdi's three-act opera that features an Italian libretto, written by Francesco Maria Piave. It is based on Victor Hugo's play, called Le roi s'amuse. Opening at Le Fenice in Venice on March 11, 1851, the opera has since been critically acclaimed worldwide. It is soon expected to return to the theaters in grand style and fans across the nation are looking forward to it with great expectations.
Rigoletto has a powerful plot and has been controversial since the very beginning. The opera is full of irony and curses. In short, Rigoletto can be called a compelling mesh of seduction, treachery and intrigue.
The main characters in the opera include Duke of Mantua, Gilda - Rigoletto's daughter (voice type: Soprano), Count Ceprano - a nobleman (voice type: bass), Countess Ceprano - his wife (voice type: mezzo soprano)Count Monterone - nobleman and enemy of the Duke (voice type: baritone), Sparafucile - an assassin (voice type: bass), Maddalena - Sparafucile's sister (voice type: contralto), and Rigoletto - the Duke's hunchback court jester (voice type: baritone).
The opera also opened in the UK area, premiering at the current Royal Opera House, on May 14 1853. Soon after, in 1855, the opera also opened in the United States of America, at Academy of Music, New York. The production, however, got banned in France after its initial controversial debut, which featured the endeavored murder of a crowned head. Today, the audiences, far and wide, appreciate the novelty of Rigoletto. The opera continues to travel around the globe, stopping over at different venues, where fans gather to watch their beloved theatrical production all over again.
The opera of Rigoletto has become a staple of the standard operatic repertoire in the modern times.
