In the Latin music industry, one of the best known names in pop music is Raphael. From Linares in the Spanish province of Jaen, he debuted onto the Spanish pop music scene in 1959. A singer and an actor, he has since then released many songs and albums through labels such as Sony Records, Hispavox and EMI Records. His music has earned him both fame and fortune. His fan following transcends national boundaries. Today, he is regarded as a pioneer of modern Spanish music and has influenced generations of Spanish singers. His wide range of vocals still make him stand out.
This renowned Spanish singer and actor, known for his roles on television, movies and stage, was born in Linares. Nicknamed the Nightingale of Linares, his family moved to Madrid, when he was just nine months old. By the age of three, he had begun singing and was a member of a children's choir at the age of four. When he was nine, he participated in a Europe–wide competition held in Salzburg, Austria and was awarded the Best Child Voice in Europe.
Professionally, Raphael began his career after he was signed by Philips Records, a Dutch record label. They produced his two amazing songs, titled A pesar de todo and Te voy a contar mi vida. These songs immediately established him as the rising star of the Spanish speaking world, emphasizing his signature sound and his presence on the stage. His on stage theatrics, dressing up in costumes and folk dancing during the concerts, made him an instant hit. He also gained praise for his wide vocal range. At the age of nineteen, he participated in the Benidorm International Song Festival, held in Spain, and won the first, second and even third place awards for three of his songs. These were Tu Conciencia, Inmensidad and Llevan.
He was then signed by Barclay Records and Hispavox, where he would establish long working relationships with Waldo de los Rios, a famous orchestrator from Argentina, and Manuel Alejandro, a renowned Spanish songwriter. He also participated in the Eurovision Song Contest twice, earning the sixth and seventh positions, the highest ever for a Spanish singer. He soon began playing concerts all over Latin America, Europe, Japan, Russia and the US.
As an actor, he debuted in 1966 with roles in Cuando tu no estas. He would go on to play roles in many more movies. But it is in music that he has made his mark. A pioneer of modern Spanish music, he is ranked as one of the most influential Spanish singers during the latter half of the twentieth century. He can now be seen live by buying Raphael tickets.
