It was adapted to the stage by famous playwright Terrence McNally in 1996 who got Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty to write the lyrics and music respectively for the show. The tale follows the lives of three very different families from diverse backgrounds and how their lives collide during the First World War. The show made its debut in Toronto and moved to Broadway in 1998 where it became a massive hit. It was nominated for thirteen Tony Awards, winning four. It won six Drama Desk Awards as well. The words of a mastermind

Ragtime was originally a book written by E.L. Doctorow in 1975. He was a very popular and influential author, whose unique style of writing made him internationally renowned. He used to write epic tales of fiction that were brought to life by adding actual historic events and personalities, and making them interact with his fictional world and its characters. This added credence to his stories and made them relatable and a joy to read.

The book was very well received when it came out and was nominated for the Nebula Award for the “Best Novel.” It went on to win the National Book Critics Circle Award for fiction and the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters Award. The book was also listed among the TIME 100 Best English-Language Novels from 1923 to 2005.

The adaption of a masterpiece

The original Ragtime story was adapted in to a musical by Terrence McNally in 1996. He wrote the book, while the lyrics and music were done by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty respectively. McNally is one of the most illustrious playwrights in the world today and has been involved in the business for over fifty years. In this time he has managed to win four Drama Desk Awards, four Tony Awards and an Emmy Award.

Ahrens is a well respected lyricist who has been involved with theater for over forty years. She has also won a Tony Award, a Drama Desk Award and an Emmy Award. She has been nominated for the Academy Award on multiple occasions as well. Her long time collaborator and world famous composer Flaherty has over thirty years of experience in the field, and has managed to win a Tony Award, a Drama Desk Award and an Olivier Award.

The first production of this remarkable story debuted in 1996 at the Ford Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto. After a successful run, it was moved to Los Angeles a year later and made its Broadway premiere in 1998. Its run lasted for over two years and over eight hundred shows, winning great reviews along the way, as well as being nominated for several high profile awards. 

The continuation of a masterwork

Since then Ragtime has gone on to become a world famous musical, with several more revivals over the years. It has been nominated for thirteen Tony Awards to date, winning four along the way. The show has also won six Drama Desk Awards and a Laurence Olivier Award as well. Now it is being revived once more and what sets this new production apart from all others is that after a long time, the true spirit of the original has been captured once again.
