The hit Off-Broadway comedy by Matt Cox is enjoying an extensive run at the New World Stages and the soaring Puff tickets sales suggest packed house. “Puffs, or: Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic & Magic” made its debut in 2016, before heading to Manhattan’s Elektra Theater in 2017 and finally making a leap to New York’s New World Stages. The play runs for one hour and 45 minutes without any intermission, treating the audience to laugh-out-loud moments. In a gist, the show is a comedic homage to J.K. Rowling’s blockbuster novels “Harry Potter”, in which the not-so-cool and smart kids take the front seat. Displaying brilliant imagination, playwright Max and director Kristin McCarthy Parker have unleashed a fascinating new story.

Packed with Knowing Winks to All Things Harry Potter
Some call it a spinoff, some a parody and at its core playwright Matt Cox’s “Puffs” does affectingly celebrate the heart of the infamous story, books and movies. Potterphiles – the diehard Harry Potter fans, will get a chance to reminisce about a story that effectively brings to stage familiar and not-so-familiar things.
What makes “Puffs, or: Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic & Magic” different from the original?
The wiz kids – Harry Potter, Ron and Hermione take a back seat in this production, leaving stage for the Puffs, the mediocre residents of the house of Hufflepuff. While Harry was destined to save the world, these Puffs just happen to be there and have to fight against all adversaries to rise as the underdogs.
Max thought of Puffs to be the perfect heroes of his story – undervalued, overlooked and ultimately deemed as the losers. Those who’ve watched the play called it an enjoyable class reunion, packed with deep cut references to the original Harry Potter. The Potterphiles take delight when the script mentions professorial quirks, spells and reference to the typical pop culture jokes that the books created.
The Puffs Team
Primarily a cast of 11 performers, the “Puffs, or: Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic & Magic” is led by the Wayne, an average wizard. He’s supported by Megan, a goth gal and Oliver, who is math genius. The play depicts them as ordinary students, surely not at the top of their class but having perseverance to fight evil and finding power in friendship.
The original Off-Broadway cast features Zac Moon as the carefree, lighthearted Wayne and Langston Belton as Oliver. Julie Ann Earls soars as the badass Megan, nailing her performance as the gal full of angst. Truly an ensemble cast, it rounds off with Andy Miller, Nick Carillo, Jessie Cannizzaro, Madeleine Bundy and Eleanor Philips, each actor covering several parts.
The story is neatly executed through ghosts, house elf and professors, among other characters. A.J. Ditty plays the narrator, and his engaging, passionate narration takes the audience through the story.
The production team boasts of Madeleine Bundy as the costume designer, lighting design is by Herrick Goldman; Matt Cox is not just the playwright but also on sound design, with Brian Hoes as the music composer.
Through strong theater aesthetics, the production engages in swift costume and prop changes, whilst keeping constant activity on the stage. Puffs, or: Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic & Magic presents its own hilarious narrative, weaving a story around the events that take place at the wizarding school. There are digs at the Harry Potter books and film adaptations, references made to the endearing plot that had people crazy – and yet, Puffs manages to hold its own.
Puffs tickets holders will get to enjoy a different version of the key moments and they are presented just brilliantly. If you’re a Harry Porter fan you’ll be charmed and if you’re a Hogwarts virgin – yes it’s actually a term for the Harry Potter world’s debutants, you’ll be enchanted.
Puffs, or: Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic & Magic is the next big things in the world of comedic theater. Offering the “best unique theatrical experience” (Off-Broadway Alliance Awards), it will leave you thoroughly entertained.
