The love scene in the second act of the play was not played in Britain as it was too risqué. After the play hit the British provinces in 1930, the play got Broadway Productions in 1931 which proved to be the revival of the play for more than half a dozen times both in Broadway and West End. The play Private Lives was initially conceived during Coward’s stay at Shanghai as he encountered influenza. As he recovered from it, the final draft of the play was written in four days thus Coward forced himself to make the selection of the actors and actresses for the play. He started contacting and engaging actors like Gertrude Lawrence and later Adrianne Allen and Laurence Oliver were also given the role in the play. Coward himself played the part of Elyot thus making this play a complete presentation as a whole.  Coward conceived Victor and Sybil as minor characters but later he realized that they were also as great as Amanda and Elyot. The play was on its way to production and the rehearsals were going on when an objection was raised on the love scene in the second act by Lord Chamberlain. Coward cleared his perception of the play and went to the Lord for justification. He assured to present the play in such an objectionable and dignified manner that nothing of this sort would take place. Thus finally the play was staged and at the end of the performance the signature move of Coward was also shown where at the fall of the curtain the main characters sneak out. At Times Square Theatre the first Broadway production was aired on 1931. The New Yorkers described it as an enthusiastic play and applauded the performance of Coward too. The production ran more than 250 performances and was greatly appreciated for the quality of performance and writing. The play Private Lives was also revived in West End in 1944. During this time the play was revived in Broadway for almost six times. During the US tour, the production grossed $ 1.5 million from just three states, thus truly depicting their liking in the public.
The major revivals of the play took place after 1980’s. The play was performed at JKFCenter for Performing Arts in 1983, then in 1990 at London’s Aldwych Theatre. Then later in 2002, the play was revived in Richard Rodgers theatre and won Tony Award for Best Revival. In 2010, Richard Eyre directed the play and revived its glory at Vaudeville Theatre.
