The Story of Present Laughter

Set in Garry Essendine’s London flat, Present Laughter revolves around the life of the famous actor, Garry. He freely indulges himself in wine, women and sleeping late while he goes through a mid-life crisis. The story starts with a young admirer of Garry’s, Daphne Stillington, convincing him to let her stay the night at his place. The next day, Garry manages to make her leave but only after she has been noticed by the house’s staff. Soon comes in Garry’s ex-wife, Liz Essendine, with whom he is still in contact with. While the two talk, a young and ambitious playwright, Roland Maule enters the scene to get Garry’s critique on his new play. After ushering him out the house, Garry is faced with another “situation”. Joanna, the wife of Garry’s producer Harry Lyppiatt shows up at Garry’s house and tries to seduce him. Soon, he finds himself caught between fawning women, crazed playwrights and unexpected twists.

Reviews for Present Laughter

Present Laughter has been very well received by fans and critics. Since its very first production, it has gotten excellent reviews. The Observer talked about it in the following words,

“Mr. Coward’s production is so inventive, and his own performance so adroit in its mockery of the vain, posturing, and yet self-scrutinizing and self-amused matinee idol, that Present Laughter is likely to be future mirth for as long as Mr. Coward cares to run it."

The Times was also full of praise for the work of Noel Coward, and called it, “a wittily impudent and neatly invented burlesque of a French farce”

The recent productions of Present Laughter have also been appreciated heavily by critics all across the country. With Kevin Kline in the lead role, it is no wonder that the production is one of the most awaited events of this year. The New York Times praised his work in the following words, “Let us give thanks for Kevin Kline” and the Hollywood Reported has said that, “Kevin Kline brings down the house! Unmissable!” The Wall Street Journal has been singing praises for the play as well, saying that “Present Laughter is a comedic triumph”.
