After reaching the mark of 9000+ performances, Perfect Crime stands as the longest running play in the history of the New York City. Premiered back in 1987, Perfect Crime has a 'perfect' plot that is full of twists and turns - a must have for any play in the mystery genre. Originally orchestrated by Warren Manzi, Perfect Crime is a lot more than what conventional thrillers are like. The play is full of shocks and surprises, giving the viewers many moments that are quite contrary to their expectations. At times its turns thrilling and dramatic, while at the other moment, it leaves the viewers bursting into laughter in order to break the tension of dramatic situations.

Perfect Crime is a tale of Margaret Thorne Brent, a Harvard graduate and a psychiatrist by profession. As the play sets in, Margaret is found accused of killing her wealthy husband of British descent, W. Harrison Brent. The cat and mouse game comes into play when Margaret is trapped in between the investigation that is carried out by Inspector Ascher, and the crazy enough actions of her mentally disturbed patient named Lionel McAuley. Off course, we will not provide you any spoilers here but you can expect a lot of thrills and chills as the story unfolds.

The history of the play goes all the way back to 1980 when the original writer of the play, Warren Manzi, optioned Perfect Crime for Broadway. At that time, Manzi was only 25 years of age; hence he became the youngest author ever to have his writing being optioned for Broadway. Prior to writing that play, Manzi had recently graduated from Yale School of Drama and was portraying the role of Mozart in another Broadway production called Amadeus. However the idea of bring his work to Broadway was dropped when the producer of the play wanted to rename the play to Guilty Hands. After having his hopes shattered from there, Manzi turned to Hollywood and started writing screen plays for various forms of media.

Manzi decided to return to his the play once again in 1986 when Armand Hyatt was the artistic director of the "Actors Collective" - a non-profit theater company. Before presenting his work to the world, Manzi reworded his play, and during that task he also collaborated with Jeffrey Hyatt, and Jay Stone. By the dawn of the year 1987, Manzi scheduled discussions with Armand Hyatt and the State Attorney to open the revised version of his play in New York City. After going through Manzi's work, Hyatt was convinced that the approach Manzi utilized while writing the play, went far beyond the typical approach used in most of the thrillers. So Hyatt decided to start working on the project, along with Jeffrey Hyatt and Jay Stone, and so the magical historical journey of the Perfect Crime initiated.

Several years after the play was originally written, the Perfect Crime finally made it to the theater in 1987. The play opened at the Courtyard Playhouse in the Greenwich Village. The play was produced by a non-profit organization named Actors Collective, and at that time Warren Manzi himself was the artistic director of the organization. Soon after looking the kind of feedback that the play received, Armand Hyatt decided to move the play to an Off Broadway venue for a limited run that was scheduled to last only for four weeks.

But after the play opened on April 18, 1987; its scheduled limited run went a bit farther than scheduled. Ever since then till today, the play has given well over 9,000 performances so far and counting. Over the years the play has been staged at a number of venues but its permanent home came out to be at the Snapple Theater Center.
