For almost eleven years now, One Man Star Wars has enjoyed the status of being one of the most highly praised film-to-play adaptations. The one-man show has not only inspired awe amongst audiences but also garnered critical acclaim for itself. The eighty-minute long theatrical piece is performed solely by "Charles Ross" and condenses the plot of three of the original Star War films.  Often described as 'surprising' by a majority of fans and even as 'engaging' by some, One Man Star Wars tickets are usually sold out quite a while before the production opens.

As the name very obviously suggests, the One Man Star Wars is a theatrical adaptation of the Star Wars film series that was conceptualized by "George Lucas Junior" who is a renowned personality in Hollywood today. The title of being the third highest grossing film series to date resides with the Star Wars franchise. Apart from the commercial success, the series has bagged ten Academy Awards including three for "Special Achievement", one for "Costume Design" and one for "Visual Effects" as well. It was also nominated for fifteen other honors by the Academy. Correctly categorized as a space opera, the story is set in a fictional galaxy and features a majestic source of energy called the Force as well as a variety of alien species. The series depicts the battle between the hostile Smith, who harness the dark aspect of the Force to conquer the galaxy, and the Jedi who utilize the positive energy to maintain control. Since the release of the first one about a quarter of a century ago, six more films have been released in the series. However, the script of the play focuses on three of the films in the Star War film series, namely "Episode IV: A New Hope", "Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back" and "Episode VI: Return of the Jeidi", which were released in 1977, 1980 and 1983 as the original trilogy.

The actor and the writer of the theatrical adaptation, Charles Ross, claims to be an avid fan of the Star Wars film series and to have watched the original trilogy over four hundred times. In an interview in 2007, the Canadian actor claimed to enjoy playing the role of the ‘Emperor’ the most. Yet he feels that the character he can relate to the most is "Luke Skywalker". In 2004, Ross began performing One Man Lord of The Rings, which was a similar film-to-play adaptation of the eponymous film series. However, he ceased further productions owing to an issue over copyrights until it was resolved in 2009. Like Charles Ross, the director of the show "Ti-Jon David Daw" is from Canada. He has a well-established reputation of an adroit director and playwright involved primarily in fringe theatre. Prior to the premier of One Man Star Wars, he acted in ‘A Canadian Bartender at Butlins’ and ‘The Slip-Knot’, both of which were one person shows as well that did not incite much appreciation.  However, despite the mild reception of his previous attempts, it was perhaps the experience of participating in them that ensured the articulate direction of the play.

The production opened in British Columbia at a popular playhouse known as Pavillion Theatre in 2001. All the characters were (and are) played by Ross alone, which is exactly why the play is known as One Man Star Wars. The remarkable impersonation of almost all well-known characters with distinct voices and gestures was the highlight of the premiere. In fact, the imitations were described as ‘spot on’ particularly that of robot character R2-D2. To date, there have been almost two thousand performances. The piece has amused audiences in nearly one hundred and twenty cities initially as a performance at fringe festivals and later as a play that tours independently.

Without a doubt, One Man Star Wars is a treat for all the ardent fans of the Star Wars trilogy. Not only does it offers a replay of the entire trilogy within an hour and a half, but also amuses the audience via imitations of partly animated onscreen characters. It is advisable to purchase tickets to the next opening of the play as soon as they are available. Considering the popularity that the show has gained over the course of eleven years, One Man Star Wars tickets are bound to run out in no time.
