Once on This Island: A Masterpiece
Once on This Island is the creation of Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens. Both of them have earned nominations for several accolades, including two Academy Awards each. Flaherty, who has previously provided his compositions for different musicals such as "My Favorite Year," "A Man of No Importance," and "The Glorious One," has given the music for this show. On the other hand, Ahrens, who won a Tony Award for his work on the hit Broadway musical "Ragtime," has penned the lyrics of the show. She is also credited for writing the book of Once on This Island.
Based on the novel "My Love, My Love; or, The Peasant Girl" written by the Trinidad-born American writer Rosa Cuthbert Heart, the duo decided to introduce Once on This Island in 1990. On May 6th of that year, the show was taken on a test run and performed at Off-Broadway's Playwrights Horizon. It concluded its performances on May 27th.
The Broadway Debut
Once On This Island's Off-Broadway run was met with positive response from fans, encouraging Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens to premiere their musical on Broadway. On October 18, 1990, the show opened at the Booth Theatre in New York City, New York, and ran for 469 performances before ending on December 1, 1991. The original Broadway production was directed and choreographed by the multiple Tony-nominated Argentine-American theater director, choreographer, and dancer Graciela Daniele. The musical starred LaChanze as TiMoune, Jerry Dixon as Daniel Beauxhomme, Kecia Lewis-Evans as Asaka, Milton Craig Nealy as Agwe, and Andrea Frierson-Toney as Erzulie. The Broadway run was a huge success, earning several Tony Award nominations, including one in the category of Best Musical. In 2002, the original Broadway cast members, along with Drama Desk Award winner Lillian White, performed a special Once on This Island show for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and the Cantor Fitzgerald Relief Fund.
Other Popular Productions
After its successful Broadway debut, Once on This Island made its European debut in 1994 before moving to the West End later that same year. The musical was staged at the Peacock Theatre (formerly known as the Royalty Theatre) and was nominated for four Laurence Olivier Awards, winning one for Best New Musical. The original West End production of this show starred Lorna Brown as TiMoune, Anthony Corriete as Daniel Beauxhomme, Sharon D. Clarke as Asaka, and Trevor Michael Georges as Agwe. In 2009, the musical was revived in the UK, and in 2016, it was staged for the first time in Puerto Rico.
