“Old Times” Gears Up for a Theater Return
It was 1984 when the Roundabout Theater decided to produce “Old Times” and at that time the dramatist Harold Pinter was alive to offer help to the cast. Anthony Hopkins played the lead character Deeley and when he asked Pinter to explain to him the play’s ending, he replied “I don’t know. Just do it”. As spare as his advice was, Pinter’s plays have a dramatic edge that’s enigmatic, masterly and stays with the audience for a long time.
The new production will hit the theaters on September 17 for previews and an official opening has been scheduled for October 6. The production will have Oscar nominee Clive Owen playing the lead role, which will also mark his Broadway debut. Eve Best will take on the role of the visiting friend Anna and Kelly Reilly will also make her debut on Broadway as the wife Kate.
Directed by Douglas Hodge, “Old Times” is a milestone for both Owen and Hodge, as the latter will be directing his first American play. Featuring a talented creative team, Christine Jones is the set designer, costumes are designed by Constance Hoffman, whereas the music and sound design are by Thom Yorke and Clive Goodwin, respectively.
Top Reasons to Buy Old Times Tickets
It’s not quite often that a classic play makes its theater rival, especially if that play is penned by Nobel Prize winning playwright. “Old Times” features an immensely talented cast and crew, and it looks to be one the biggest Broadway hits of 2015. Need more convincing? Read on for details about the play.
- “Old Times” is an intimate, enigmatic three characters play that builds its sadness and mystery across its short running time.
- Deeley and Kate are happily married couple, and they get a visit by Kate’s old friend Anna. As the three characters reminisce about their shared past, certain uncertainty rises among the husband and wife and the two friends. Different questions arise, as to who did what to whom and who is actually honest.
- Pinter’s cryptic poetry and highly charged dialogues will keep you at the edge of your seat.
- Director Douglas Hodge used the music metaphor “It Sings, It Plays” to describe Pinter’s language. The dialogues are lean and economical, sentences are short, but they are neither flat nor steady. Their depth is overwhelming and will leave the audience saying “wow”.
- The star cast featuring the strikingly good looking and technically polish Clive Owen will blow you away with his intensity. Kelly Reilly and Eve Best will add just the right amount of spice to make the “Old Times” a standout production.
