The Storyline

The story revolves around Daniel Hillard, a recently divorced and struggling actor who is devastated over losing the custody of his children. He thinks of a brilliant plan in order to stay in touch with his kids. With the help of his brother, Hillard disguises himself as Euphegenia Doubtfire, a Scottish nanny. The elaborate disguise (pantyhose, wig etc) convinces his children and former wife that he is a nanny. He is eventually hired by his ex-wife to look after the kids and the home. Many risky and hilarious scenarios in the film threaten to disclose Hillard’s secret. Eventually the nanny helps Hillard realize his mistakes and he figures out how to improve himself as a father.

The Film and its Adaptation

The character of the fake nanny is played by the famous comedian, Robin Williams. In 1994, he won the Golden Globe for his performance in this movie. The film has also received a Golden Globe for the ‘Best Motion Picture.’ Made with a budget of only $25 million, the movie made more than $200 million at the US box office. It can be regarded as one of the best performing films of 1993. It made more than $441.3 million worldwide. Now, a musical adaptation of the same movie is in the works.

The Creative Team

The musical will be directed by Jerry Zaks, who has won the Tony Award four times. Other collaborators include Ethan Popp (music supervisor), John O’Farrell and Karey Kirkpatrick (book writers), Wayne and Karey Kirkpatrick (music writers) and Lorin Latarro (choreographer).
