Lohengrin is a famous opera by the legendary composer Richard Wagner. Categorized as a romantic opera, it is divided into three acts and was first performed in 1850. It follows the story of the character of the same name, found in German medieval romance tales as well as in the book of the same name written as a sequel to Wolfram von Eschenbach's Parzival and inspired by Garin le Loherain. This is a story best known as part of the Knight of the Swan tradition and is often regarded as one of Richard Wagner's best works. Its popularity is also seen by the number of tickets sold each year to those interested in listening to the opera live.

Lohengrin went on to inspire many works of art. It also moved King Ludwig II of Bavaria, known as the Fairy Tale King, who built his castle based on it and became Richard Wagner's patron, allowing him to compose and stage his epic composition, the Ring of the Nibelung. The most popular piece of the opera is the so-called Bridal Chorus, better known as "Here Comes the Bride," which is often played at weddings as a processional.
Lohengrin was first performed at the Staatskapelle Weimar and was directed by Franz Liszt. It was performed in honor of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe on his birthday and became an instant success. In 1855, it was performed outside Germany, at Riga, and then four years later in Austria at the famous Burgtheater. In 1867, a production was staged in Munich, starring Heinrich Vogl and Mathilde Mallinger. In 1869, it was produced at the Berlin State Opera, featuring Mathilde Mallinger again.
In 1870, Lohengrin premiered in Belgium at the La Monnaie, starring Feliciano Pons and Etienne Troy. In the US, it was staged first in New York City at the Stadt Theater, located at the Bowery in 1871. It was conducted by Adolf Neuendorff and starred Theodor Habelmann, Luise Garay-Lichtmay, Marie Frederici, Adolf Franosch, and Edward Vierling. A year later, it was first performed in Italy at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, featuring an Italian translation by Salvatore Marchesi. It was monumental as the first Richard Wagner opera conducted in Italy, and was attended by the likes of Giuseppe Verdi.
In the UK, Lohengrin was performed at the Royal Opera House, located at Covent Garden in London, using the Italian translation. It starred Ernesto Nicolini, Emma Albani, Anna D'Angeri, Maurel, and Wladyslaw Seiderman. In Australia, its debut performance occurred at the Melbourne Prince of Wales Theatre. The Metropolitan Opera, in the US, performed the opera as part of its inaugural season. In 1887, it was performed in France and in 1891, it was performed in Chicago at the Roosevelt University's Auditorium Building.
