• Both The Lion King movie and the musical are lauded for their opening scenes, which create quite a powerful impact. But did you know that the original opening scene in the movie was to feature an introduction of all the key characters. That was until Elton John presented the directors Rob Minkoff and Roger Allers with the “Circle of Life”. They had no choice but to scrap their original idea and hence produced the spellbinding Pride Rock scene.

• The Lion King was the first animated film by Disney that featured a completely original plot. It was neither an adaptation nor did it stem out of a preexisting story.

• Rafiki has been presented as a mix of mandrill and a baboon. In real life mandrills do not have a tail. Also, Rafiki’s gender has been changed from the movie. In the musical Rafiki is a female character.

• It takes more than 115 people per performance to get The Lion King musical going.

• The stage version uses a hand, shadow, rod puppets, as well as two human performers to portray the lead character Simba.
