The Lion King: A theatrical hit

The Lion King is a musical whose music is provided by Elton John whereas the lyrics are written by Tim Rice. The book of this show is penned down by Roger Allers and Irene Mecchi. It is based on the 1994 Walt Disney film of the same name. The musical debuted at the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis on July 8, 1997 before it given its Broadway debut a few months later. The original Broadway production of the show was staged at the New Amsterdam Theater and starred, Jason Raize as Simba, John Vickery as Scar, Samuel E. Wright as Mufasa and Heather Headley as Nala. The show became a huge hit and won five Tony and eight Drama Desk Awards.

Following its premiere on Broadway, The Lion King went on to tour Japan before it opened in the West End's Lyceum Theatre on October 19, 1999. The show has completed more than 7000 performances there and bagged two Laurence Olivier Award out of eight nominations.
