The music for Les Miserables is composed by Claude-Michel Schonberg with lyrics by Jean-Marc Natel and Alain Boublil. The musical opened in France; however, the very first English version was staged in October of 1985. The English lyrics were written by Herbert Kretzmer. After long period of rehearsals, the show opened at London’s Barbican Arts Center. Because of its success, the production was taken to Broadway, where it opened at The Broadway Theatre in March of 1987.
