The play originally debuted in Atlanta at the Alliance Theatre in 1986. The off-Broadway performances subsequently followed until 2014, when the play premiered on Broadway. The protagonist, Audra McDonald, won the 2014 Drama Desk Award for the category “Outstanding Actress in a Play”. Circle in the Square, hosted the debut Broadway performance of the musical. With music by Lanie Robertson and direction by Lonny Price, the musical presented Audra McDonald as Billie Holiday alongside Shelton Becton as Jimmy Powers, a pianist. The extravagant sets were done by James Noone. Esosa took care of the classy costumes whereas Robert Wierzel worked on the lightening balance and Steve Canyon Kennedy worked the sound.
