Kinky Boots is a Broadway sensation that was brought on stage by theatre greats such as Cyndi Lauper, Harvey Fierstein and Jerry Mitchell. The musical opened in Chicago in 2012 and debuted a year later on Broadway. Since then, the musical has garnered widespread critical acclaim and has won numerous awards. These include three Outer Critics Circle Awards, a Drama Desk Award, an Artios Award and a Grammy Award. At the Tony Awards, the musical bagged six awards including ‘Best Musical’. Kinky Boots, the musical, is based on the 2005 movie of the same name, which itself was inspired by true events. The show has been directed and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell whereas theatre legend Harvey Fierstein wrote the musical’s book. The music and lyrics are provided by Grammy winning pop icon, Cyndi Lauper.

The musical follows the story of the good-hearted Charlie Price, whose father’s sudden death leaves him with ownership of the family business, a shoe factory. Struggling to save the business, Charlie finds inspiration in an idea proposed by a drag performer Lola, whom he meets by chance one late night. Charlie invites Lola to his shoe factory to start a new line of kinky boots, designed specifically for drag queens under Lola’s supervision.

The factory workers, especially Don, are reluctant and mock Lola and the company’s new direction. But as they near the deadline for the Milan fashion show, a beautiful story full of passion, love, friendship and acceptance ensues.

The renowned musical is now out on a US National Tour and will be stopping in major cities such as San Francisco, Costa Mesa, Cleveland, Nashville and Houston among others. In Detroit, the musical is opening at the esteemed Fisher Theatre. The touring cast includes Steven Booth, Lindsay Nicole Chambers and Joe Coots among others.
