With almost six years in the making, Kinky Boots the musical made its world premiere at the Bank of America Theatre in Chicago in 2012. After garnering positive response from its Chicago production, the musical then found its spot at New York’s Broadway Productions and debuted in 2013 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre. Although the early days of Broadway production met with mediocre response, its popularity saw a major boost just after a couple of weeks. The original Broadway production of the musical went on to receive an amazing thirteen Tony Award nominations and claimed six awards including an award for the “Best Musical”.

The inspirational story of the musical revolves around a struggling shoe factory owner who comes across a drag queen named Lola, who helps him turn his business into a huge success. The musical is about finding support and friendship from places one wouldn’t expect. Shortly after they meet, the two find out that they have more in common than they actually expected. Together they team up to bring the shoe factory to newer heights of success.

After giving sold out performances at Broadway, the musical also set out for a National Tour. As a part of the tour, Kinky Boots Charlotte performance will be staged at the Belk Theatre.
