Elvis Presley: From a Truck Driver to the King of Rock and Roll
If it weren't for the owner of Sun Records, Sam Phillips’ trust in Elvis Presley, he might not have become the star he became later on. Fueled by passion for music, Presley decided to become a singer-songwriter in the early ‘50s and recorded two-sided acetate disc, "My Happiness and That’s When Your Heartache Begins" in 1953 which caught the attention of Phillips. A year later, he cut a second acetate at Sun Records, "I’ll Never Stand In Your Way and It Wouldn’t Be the Same Without You" but it didn’t get him anywhere. At the same time, he auditioned for a spot in the group, Songfellows but failed to impress the band. Frustrated, he started to work as a truck driver for the Crown Electric Company.
Elvis Presley was then called by Sam Phillips, along with bassist Bill Black and guitarist Winfield Moore, for a recording session. The trio tried hard to produce something impactful in the session but it did not work out. Then Presley started singing Arthur Crudup’s That’s All Right. Black and Moore began jamming with him and Philips was hugely impressed. He then urged them to record a cover version of the song which was later played extensively by the famous Memphis DJ, Dewey Phillips on his show, Red, Hot and Blue. The track received great reception from the fans which helped kick off a very successful partnership between Presley and Phillips.
In 1956, Elvis Presley came out with his debut self-titled studio effort. Produced by Sam Phillips and Steve Sholes, the record turned out to be a chart-topping success in the U.S. and was included in the Rolling Stone’s list of the, ‘500 Greatest Albums of All Time.’ He then dropped two more number-one records, ‘Elvis’ and ‘Elvis’ Christmas Album’ out of which the latter marked his first record to go multi-platinum in the U.S.
From that point onwards, he went on to drop one hit album after the other, cementing his place among legends in the process. At the same time, Presley made a name for himself as an actor and starred in several major Hollywood blockbusters. In 1986, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
