About Harry Potter And The Cursed Child – The Play

The plans to bring Harry Potter into a stage play form were first revealed in December 2013. Around this time, the project had already been under development for nearly a year. Rowling revealed that the play would shed light on Harry's early years as an orphan and an outcast, a part of the story not yet told. In June 2015, the stage play was confirmed, under the title of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. It was also revealed that the show would premiere in the middle of 2016 in London, on the 18th anniversary of the first publication of Rowling's most popular novel, and what started it all - Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.

When announcing the project, Rowling gave Potter fans an insight into what to expect. She said it would not be a prequel and would explore an entirely new story. As for her choice of medium, bringing Harry Potter to the stage, she said that fans would agree with her choice when they saw it for themselves. She also revealed that the play is divided into two parts that can be seen together or over the course of two back-to-back evenings. It was also confirmed that the storyline of the play would be set nineteen years after the final novel of the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, concluded. Harry is now the Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement and has a son named Albus Severus Potter.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a play by Jack Thorne, based on the fictional character, Harry Potter, and the latest story written about him by J.K. Rowling and John Tiffany. The play first opened in London, at the Palace Theatre, and was a massive success. It opened on Broadway in April 2018 at the famed Lyric Theatre. Part of the West End cast reprised their roles on Broadway, including Sam Clemmett, Anthony Boyle, Poppy Miller, Alex Price, Noma Dumezweni, Paul Thronley, and Jamie Parker.

Critical Reception for Harry Potter And The Cursed Child

The acting skills of the cast have been appreciated by critics and audiences, and many have drawn comparisons between the play and the original Harry Potter series and movies. Multiple publications have given the production a five-star rating, including London Evening Standard, WhatsOnStage.com, and The Independent.

Fans of Harry Potter were, to some extent, skeptical of the various depictions in the play; however, they did enjoy certain new aspects of the storyline, such as the character of Scorpius Malfoy.
