The Hands on a Hardbody musical has been adapted from the book of a Pulitzer Prize winner, Doug Wright. With music composed by Trey Anastasio, lyrics by Amanda Green, staging by Sergio Trujillo and direction by Neil Pepe, it has has turned out to be an incredible creation that has been acclaimed by fans and critics alike. The musical is actually based on a 1997 documentary authored by S.R. Bindler which is produced by Kevin Morris and Bindler.
The Broadway show brings together a dozen of Texans who enter into a contest sponsored by Nissan dealers in the city of Longview. The hard-luck souls fight under the bright scorching sun in the hope of winning a brand new Nissan Hardboy truck. The Nissan truck is placed in the center of the stage and rotates in all directions as the contestants bump it around. This shining truck symbolizes the hopes of the competitors and tests the limits of their physical and mental stamina to win it. It is only the force of American dream and ambition that gets them going. Only one lucky person who remains standing with his or her hand firmly fixed on the truck wins the contest.
The role of Hunter Foster as Benny Perkins is amazing as he is extremely competent and does not let his rivals go ahead of him. When the final round was just approaching, Benny sang at one of the musicals: "You’re fighting for your breath, right from the moment of your birth." Also, Keith Carradine as JD Drew is an old fellow but still leaves no stone unturned in giving tough competition to other contestants. JD lost his job after an accident that has forced him into retirement. He also does not let his wife take up the job at Wal-Mart and participates in the contest in the hope of winning a new truck. Similarly, Jesus Peña as Jon Rua also takes part in the competition because she wants to join a veterinary school and she can only pursue her dream by winning this truck and putting it up for sale.
It is nice to listen to the contestants talk about their aspirations and hard-luck histories to the audience. A mix of funky and folksy music blended with the pulsating bass lines, honky-tonk piano and acoustic guitar will get your feet tapping on the floor, so do not forget to grab your Hands on a Hardbody tickets . The use of many colorful local idioms by the characters enhances the look and feel of the show. However, the hope turns into disappointment for all the contestants who lose except the one who wins the truck. Compared to the typical Broadway musicals, Hands on a Hardbody ends with grimness because the characters part ways as soon as the contest ends and return to the struggles of life again. Moreover, the musical does not have any romantic flavor to bind it together.
The musical is a brilliant slice of entertainment that you cannot afford to miss. The show brings to limelight the struggle of the lower middle class who is constantly struggling in the poor economic environment. Mr. Wright’s book highlights the harsh realities of the current economic prospects that make the survival of an ordinary man difficult. The director and choreographer have put in every extra bit of energy to create an interesting piece that revolves around a static event because you cannot add many twists and turns to the story that involves only the people standing still for days. The show has got some lovely singing and humor that will hold your senses from beginning till the end of the show.
