Hamlet is one William Shakespeare’s most enacted plays. Given to its rich language, time-defying political and psychological commentary, the play remains poignant and relevant to date, four centuries since it was first created.
Hamlet, a university student and the Prince of Denmark, returns home for his Father’s funeral to find his mother married to his uncle. Instructed by the Ghost of his Father to get revenge, the play is a journey of one individual’s descent into murder, melancholy and madness.
Hamlet is the Bard’s mirror, held up to reflect an audience’s sense of morality unto itself. Become a part of this historic experience and purchase Hamlet tickets now.
The Productions
Interested individuals have the choice to attend excellent productions of Hamlet in New York and San Diego this year. In New York, the Public Theater is staging Sam Gold’s envisioning of the Bard’s play, while Barry Edelstein has taken that responsibility for San Diego’s Lowell Davies Festival. Hamlet tickets for both venues are available now, but definitely not for long. To be (there) or not be (there); that is the question!
Hamlet at the Public
The Public Theater is one of the most prestigious off-Broadway theaters in the country. Known for its patronage of new talent, the Public Theater has debuted many of Broadway’s greatest hits. A Chorus Line (1975), Fun Home (2013) and the greatly acclaimed Hamilton (2016) all made their first performances in the Public Theater.
The cast boasts Oscar Isaac as Hamlet and Keegan-Michael Key as Horatio. Isaac has become a well-known actor given to his role in the blockbuster Star Wars while Keegan-Michael Key is no stranger to comedy fans, with his famous television show Key and Peele.
This is the second time Sam Gold is headed back to the Public Theater. His Tony-winning run with Fun Home first took place on this very stage as well. Gold has a healthy working chemistry with the Public, and therefore is in his element while there. Therefore, expectations for this production are high.
Hamlet at the Lowell Davies Festival
The Lowell Davies Festival, held at the Old Globe in San Diego, is a tribute to the resilience of this age-old theater. Having burned down on three separate occasions since 1978, the Old Globe has been refurnished within a few months in all three situations. The third time round, it was renamed the Lowell Davies Theater after a former Board President and supporter of the Old Globe. It is an outdoor theater, and does Shakespeare in the Park festivals every year.
This festival, then, becomes an idyllic setting for a Hamlet performance. The outdoor setting is reminiscent of the Globe in England, where Shakespeare’s Hamlet production was first staged. Secondly, the ability to survive is a commonality between the two and therefore heightens the play’s experience to a considerable degree.
Barry Edelstein’s Hamlet has been in the works for over a year now and promises to feature the nation’s finest actors. His retelling of this awe-inspiring tale, under the breathtaking stars of San Diego, is going to be a visual treat you don’t want to miss!
A Little Hamlet Trivia
Before you go watch Hamlet (because we are sure you will), here is a little trivia for you. This knowledge is bound to give you an edge over every other person in the theater.
Firstly, Hamlet is considered one of Shakespeare’s most seminal works. It is a widely translated of play, having been adapted in seventy-five languages on film and stage.
Shakespeare named his son Hamnet, who died in infancy and left the Bard devastated. The play came after this tragedy, and is a reversed dystopian relationship between father and son.
Hamlet is not an original story; it is based on an oft-told legend during Elizabethan times about an alleged Prince of Denmark. However, this version of it is definitely much better known than others. What allows for the Bard’s work to stand apart, other than the compelling characterization, is its language. Some of the most iconic dialogues of all time are a testament to this work of his. Hamlet’s famous soliloquy, “to be or not to be” has become an integral part of popular culture and expression.
Furthermore, Shakespeare is accredited with coining over two thousand new words and phrases, many of which feature in Hamlet. “Clothes make a man”, “The lady doth protest too much”, “auspicious” and “barefaced” are some of the Bard’s coinages that feature and debut in Hamlet.
In fact, you could purchase Hamlet tickets now and go find many more Shakespeare originals in the play yourself.
