Production History

Musician Anaïs Mitchell describes the show's first incarnation as a sort of "DIY theater project." Before she released her album with the same name in 2010, Hadestown had been performed on stage a few times in Vermont, Mitchell's home state. After the success of her 2010 album, Mitchell started looking for a director and identified Rachel Chavkin for the job after watching her production of Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812. The two began work on a major stage adaptation for which Mitchell wrote 15 extra songs and added more dialogue to give clarity to the storyline.

The newly-created show made its debut at the New York Theatre Workshop in the summer of 2016. That initial run was supposed to be two months long, but the popularity and high demand of the show prompted the organizers to add almost another month of shows to the schedule.

In late 2017, Hadestown was presented for a pre-Broadway run at Edmonton’s Citadel Theatre. The following year, the celebrated production opened at London’s Olivier Theatre which is a part of the National Theatre.
