The history of the Nutcracker

In 1816, E.T.A Hoffmann wrote one of his most popular stories, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. Almost three decades later, it was revised by French writer Alexander Dumas. His version of the story was soon converted into a libretto which was later choreographed by two of the most accomplished ballet masters of all time, Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was then asked to provide the score for the ballet. In 1892, the Nutcracker was staged for the first time at the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg.
