Fully Committed – A Laughing Riot That Entertains And Inspires

Revived for stage after 17 years, Fully Committed is a one-man, multi-character comedic whirlwind. Modern Family’s Jesse Tyler Ferguson makes his Broadway return with this 90-minute hilarious show as Sam, a hapless reservations clerk at the hottest restaurant in New York. Five-time Emmy nominated Ferguson gives voice to 40 different characters, and he manages that without breaking a sweat. He spews one ingenious character after the other with superb execution, matching the fast pace of the show. Showing immense versatility, Ferguson steps in as not just the lead character Sam but also as Gwyneth Paltrow’s chirpy assistant, a know-it-all bully chef, a domineering French maître d’ and a socialite, among many others.

A struggling actor, Sam manages reservations hotline down in the lonely basement, dealing with desperate customers who want to book a table at the prestigious restaurant at all cost. In between taking calls of people from all walks of life – tourists, entitled patrons, celebrities, socialites and other colorful personalities, Sam also has to listen to the rants of the restaurant’s staff. While all of these scenarios and conversations make the play hilarious and fun to watch, Sam’s inner turmoil and own realities bring a sincere and warm feel to the show. His desire to be an actor, loss of a loved one and not being able to do anything – like eat or even pee without someone covering up for him on the hotline brings a personal aspect to the play.

Both Ferguson’s and Jason Moore’s efforts command immense praise for their brilliant execution and synchronization. A comedic tour de force, audience with Fully Committed tickets are treated to non-stop activity on the stage. A theatre veteran, Ferguson skillfully takes cues from Moore’s sure-handed and subtle direction, flipping between characters with great ease. He would jump into a character with a simple change in his voice and body language. Derek McLane has done an incredible job with the stage design, creating a perfect setting with a chaotic basement office set underneath a sculptural mesh of wall-size wine refrigerator and dining chairs.

Heartfelt, believable and hilarious, Fully Committed is a show not to be missed this season. Strictly a limited run, it will take a final bow on July 24 at the Lyceum Theatre. Already some great reviews have started to pour in as Time Out New York stated, “Hilarious and touching, gallops along at a swift, almost frantic pace.”
