Fidelio's first staging in 1814 aimed at bringing Beethoven's opera to public and spread message of love and hope. In the background of tyrant rulers and oppressive everyday live, this show pushes for a struggle to fight back for rights. This was and remains the fighting spirit and aim of all the people who have brought change. It is also relevant to present times as the political conditions and pressures have evolved, making life more difficult for the common man. Fidelio has a timeless frame and theme for Opera, making it an awe inspiring presentation.

A great name of German opera, soprano Christiane Laibor will be the highlight of the show. This is her first appearance ever in the US and she is very excited about it. Sponsored by The James and Sherry Raisbeck Lead Singers Fund, Libor will showcase her talent and charm in this performance. Known for the most dramatic demeanor, Libor will take on her role of Leonore. She will be seen as a devoted, love struck wife who is driven to rescue her love at every cost. She will be seen voicing her emotions and feelings with her signature warm, deep and at times high power notes. This international opera sensation will make a memorable debut and bring undertones of German opera to Seattle.

The star cast of the show also features some great opera singers and actors. Seattle Opera's tenor Clifton Forbis as Florestan is the male lead. He is a big star of the show as well as a great tenor who has an additional super baritone. He portrays physical longing and mental torment experienced in the ecstasy of love. Arthur Woodley as the head of jail named Rocco will show the duality of character in a common man with authority. Anya Matanovic as Marzelline, Greer Grimsley as the tyrant governor Don Pizarro, John Tessier as Jaquino and Kevin Short as Don Fernando, are also highlights of the stage. They have been hailed tremendously, for their previous roles and performances at the Seattle Opera. Fidelio will hopefully cement them a level above.

Fidelio is Leonore, a woman in disguise; who trusts and dearly loves her husband Florestan. In the middle of political revolt and uprising, her husband is falsely accused and jailed for having strong political views. The couple parts and is desperate to come back. Leonore, driven to beat all odds, rescue and bring her husband home successfully.

Beethoven's music boldly sings out the pain of longing and the woman's struggle. It is a simple yet powerful drama focusing of human despair in difficult times. However, the grand vocals, gorgeous ensembles and detailed set design by the creative team trims it really well. The most interesting part of the show is the climax presented by Prisoners' Chorus. This love duet is truly euphoric and celebrates the final moments in the right way. The chorus of this song is also exceptional as one is bound to find oneself in a trance even after the act has ended.

This season Seattle Opera will present multiple performances of this show. One of these shows features a special appearance by Sporano Marcy Stonika. This ex-Seattle Opera Young Artist will personify Leonore in her radiant style and bring a different angle and dimension to the character. Wining rave review, Stonika and Forbes will sing an unforgettable show. With a creative team including Set Designer Robert Dahlstrom and Costume Desginer Catherine Meacham Hunt and Lighting Director Duane Schuler; Chris Alexander has crafted an emotional timeless musical. The show has already won rave reviews for its previews and is ready to go places.
